John Wick Review: Slick Gun Fu Entertainment

Movie Review: John Wick

In case you’re wondering about the summary, yes, it’s a hitman out for revenge because someone killed his dog. But once you get past this John Wick is actually worth it for viewers looking for run and gun thrills.

The movie is similar to The Equalizer – two widowed guys with a deadly set of skills are forced out of retirement because of a douchebag – but John Wick commits to what it sets out to do. It’s not a bleak artsy-fartsy character story of the anti-hero. In fact, John Wick is really nothing special but makes the best of what it has.

There’s plenty of shootouts to revel in. You can take your pick from 6 action-packed set pieces with a perfectly matched soundtrack in the background.

Keanu Reeves is fun to watch as the slick-haired John Wick. His looks and screen presence fit just right for the light type of action flicks that are meant to entertain. The guy is not your typical rugged action hero, so you end up sticking around to see if he actually makes it.

Other characters are also one-dimensionally badass, but it’s clear that this is to be expected. The rest of the cast chipped in with good performances even if they have limited screen time.

Still, John Wick is no invincible gunman. So even though he mows down the enemy with deadly accuracy, we see him limp back to an inspired setting – a hotel for hired killers. Thanks to the cinematography and camerawork, there’s a stylish contrast between John’s present and past worlds, as well as clear and crisp action scenes that show every brutal headshot.

You can see the predictable ending miles ahead, but you also find out that maybe Wick has a little bit of humanity and hope left to start over.

John Wick is a B-movie with an A-list treatment. The premise is nonsensical, the story is irrelevant, the characters are paper-thin, but it’s not trying to be what it isn’t. John Wick is here to serve a dish of cold no bullshit revenge. When you’ve had enough of indie and bleak man-on-a-mission films, this unpretentious honesty is refreshing.

John Wick

John Wick has crisp action scenes, an exciting plot, and a slick Keanu Reeves that turn it into an entertaining revenge movie.
