Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 Review: Puntastic

There’s plenty of visual gags with colorful and appetizing sentient foodimals in their natural habitat: meatbalsaurus swimming in tomato sauce surrounded by lasagna and a mosquitoast in a maple syrup swamp with pancakes to name a few. Even though the film is often hyper and chaotic, the rich details hold up – foodimals such as the cheespider is both amusing and terrifying.

The main cast is back, with the addition of a Steven Jobs recreation, who brings along the world of shiny white tech start-ups and an endless supply of soy latte.

There’s plenty for your eyes to feast on but there’s nothing much to chew on. The film has stock life lessons on friendship, the allure of fame, and corporate greed. The first movie was smarter than it looked – it poked fun at the excessive consumerism of today’s society – but the second is filled with a lowbrow comedy of puns with gems such as “We’re toast” and “There’s a leek/leak on the boat”.

The film also leaves you with a weird message – you can’t turn foodimals back into food, but you can eat animals?

Nonetheless, the film has its charms. Kids would enjoy the film’s deliciously inventive take on Jurassic Park and its easily digestible jokes, adults who expect the same wouldn’t be disappointed.
